Dandelions

Lyrics & Music: Maureen S. O'Brien, 1994

Dandelions green and golden,
Stubbornness in every shoot.
Dandelions toothed and jagged --
12 feet down, joined at the root.
You will find them clumped together --
You will find them all alone --
Growing in the garden spaces,
Growing on the poisoned places,
At their ease,
Growing their way through cement and stone.

Dandelions crowned with silver,
Cup them softly in your hand.
Blowballs swelling, trembling, sighing --
Seeds fly off into the wind.
See them bright against the blue sky;
See them floating on the breeze.
Stalks stand leafless, lorn and lonely;
But they know that they need only
Wait a while,
For dandelions spring up when they please.

Bridge:
Dandelion seeds are silky,
Gently drifting, drifting down --
Caught in grass, then sinking soilward --
Cracking, op'ning underground.
Roots push through the earth toward water,
Further down than any seed.
Tender leaves and lovely blossom --
Call them wine or call them weed.

Dandelions green and golden,
Stubbornness in every shoot.
Dandelions toothed and jagged --
12 feet down, joined at the root.
You will find them clumped together --
You will find them all alone --
Growing in the garden spaces,
Growing on the poisoned places,
At their ease,
Growing their way through cement and stone.
