Wind Beneath Wings

Lyrics: Maureen S. O'Brien
To the tune of: "The Wind Beneath My Wings"
Insp: Gryphon series by Mercedes Lackey

You soar through the sky, so high above me
That you're just a shadow on the sun --
Letting wind lift you way up there,
Climbing a staircase made of air.
So what can we humans see but blessings
When we see a gryphon fly so free?
I asked you, "What's it like to fly?"
You said (all) the words lived in the sky....

CH1:
The wind that a sword makes when it's swinging
The wind in the ears when someone sings
The wind that is word and breath and laughing
I wish you the wind beneath your wings.

And what can you feel for us but pity?
We must seem like ants upon the ground.
Even our eyes we seldom raise,
Trapped on the earth for all our days.

CH2:
And what can we humans feel but envy,
When we see the wonders that you sing?
The gifts that our magic brings are many,
But you are the ones that it gave wings....

But we never mourned a fledgling fallen,
Flung by the wind out of the sky --
The beating rain, the stormwind's blast --
We only see you sailing fast.
So you take the mountain cliffs for eyries,
And we'll take the sweet rich valley ground --
Two ways of life, but our lives one --
Both children of the wind and sun.

CH3:
The wind that a sword makes when it's swinging
The wind in the ears when someone sings
The wind that is word and breath and laughing
Is also the wind beneath your wings.
