Clay's Calypso (The Game)

I'm an officer too. That's what my kind are called,
But we don't go to Arlington whenever we fall.
A story untold and a shallow-dug grave --
Another star on Langley's wall to honor the brave.
It's classified medals and tales we can't tell;
It's publicize our failures, hide what we're doing well.
Oh, it never is easy -- that much I can say.
But if the game were easy, there'd be no need to play.

Gen'ral George Washington, he could not tell a lie?
But he loved disinformation he could leak to a spy.
And he ran his own networks, as history can show.
They saved the Revolution, and yet nobody knows!
George spied and was spied on by General Howe.
The game still hasn't changed too much between then and now.
Oh, it never is easy -- that much I can say.
But if the game were easy, there'd be no need to play.

Oh, the Cold War is over, and so is the game?
No, it's only added players and removed the neat frame.
There's a whole world of people with gripes and a scheme,
Religious inspiration or a nightmarish dream.
So we watch what goes on, and some guess at their thoughts
To try to figure out just who's a threat and who's not.
Oh, it never is easy -- that much I can say.
But if the game were easy, there'd be no need to play.

So some gather the facts; some decide what's the score.
We guard you from far places, try to ward off a war.
And it isn't a job giving too many perks --
Yeah, some of us can't even tell you just where we work.
So you should give us thanks for our long lonely hunt;
But if you don't respect us, then that's just what we want!
Oh, it never is easy -- that much I can say.
But if the game were easy, there'd be no need to play.
