Round Robin

Part 6

After Grayson left, they finally went to go eat.

At the restaurant, she noticed that Holmes was watching her intently. She gulped down the bite of food she had in her mouth and promptly choked.

"Do you have to stare at me like that while I'm eating?" she asked once she had regained her breath.

He smiled and stood up to take their trash to the recycler. As she watched him a sudden thought occurred to her. He seemed to know his way around her apartment pretty well. Were they more than friends? She felt her cheeks go red.

When he returned to the table, she rose and said, "I have to go to the ladies room, if you don't mind." She left before he could reply.

Once in the restroom, she walked to the sink, turned the faucet on and splashed cold water on her heated face.

She stood for a while with her head bent over the sink. Then she looked around the small restroom. There was a window that looked as if it were big enough for her to fit through. If she could just get away somewhere where she could think, maybe her memory would return. She was too uncomfortable to go back to Holmes just now.

Making her decision, she climbed out the window and started walking.

After what seemed like hours, she found herself in front of an old warehouse. There was something familiar about this place. She thought about it, but the memory just wouldn't come.

As she turned to go, a man blocked her way. He was dressed in the same style Holmes wore, although much more ostentatiously.

"Well, well, well," the man said, "what do we have here? I'm so glad you could join our little party."

She frowned; this man was as familiar to her as the warehouse. Almost like they were connected somehow.

"Do I know you?" she asked. The man's eyes narrowed in anger.

"Don't play games with me...."

"I guess that's a yes. I have amnesia, so I don't remember you."

"Amnesia?" the man asked. Then his lips curled into a gentle smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Beth, I have been worried about you," he said. "I thought something bad had happened to you. And when you showed up looking perfectly fine, I became angry. Forgive me?" He paused, then said, "Ah, but you are still waiting for me to introduce myself. I am Professor James Moriarty, your husband."
