Patriot Games

You people of science, come hear what I sing --
A little time travel's a dangerous thing.
There's variables plenty -- too many to tame --
And you might find yourself in some patriot game.
I'd always loved robots with all of my soul.
To build a true AI was always my goal.
But one year ago, those gray aliens came
And made me a part of the patriot game.
Some fought the Squillace and went to their graves.
But Britons will never, will never be slaves!
With nucleo-protons to throw in green flame,
My robot would win me the patriot game.
A man came to see me, walked through my front door,
And claimed we were friends though we'd not met before.
The bot he brought with him -- his plans were the same
As the robot I'd planned for the patriot game.
The nation I loved and the world that I knew
Were made by time travel gone somehow askew.
So Earth could be saved but would not be the same -
My country destroyed by my patriot game.
So now I stand watching their launch from below,
And if the world's saved then I never will know.
And if the world's saved who'll remember the name
Of the world that's well lost for the patriot game?
You people of science, come hear what I sing --
A little time travel's a dangerous thing.
There's variables plenty -- too many to tame --
And you might find yourself in some patriot game.
